Upper Strand's development on the newly created Waterfront Avenue, Edinburgh has been shortlisted for two of Scotland's most prestigious design awards.
The awards for Proposed Place Making and Best Web Site will be presented at The Scottish Design Awards, 2006, taking place at a gala dinner presentation at the Moat House Hotel in Glasgow, on Friday, 26th May. The event will play host to many of the country's top developers, designers and architects, awarding them for their outstanding achievements in the industry during the past year.
The Proposed Place Making Award is in recognition of the creation of a new place at Upper Strand, which is a joint venture between The Burrell Company and Places for People Group. As part of a major £70m regeneration programme, the company plans to build 500 homes on Edinburgh Waterfront, which has already begun, with a further five phases being developed over the next five years.
Included in these plans, involving two award winning architects, Edinburgh-based Reiach & Hall and Glasgow-based Elder & Cannon, are new streets, tree-lined boulevards, wide walkways and cycle paths, leading to squares and piazzas enhanced by sculptures, water features and extensive planting.
Andrew Burrell, Managing Director of The Burrell Company, said: "We are delighted that Upper Strand has been shortlisted for both of these awards. Our aim is to create an exciting place to live, at an affordable price with new streets, cafes and play-spaces. There has already been a great deal of interest in the early phase of the development and we are confident the entire project will be a major success."
The Best Web Site Award is in recognition of the Upper Strand's highly innovative site that makes extensive use of flash and database technology to provide visitors with a '3D Apartment Selector,' an interactive tool that allows potential purchasers to explore the development. Once potential buyers find a property that interests them, they can view more information, including an interactive 3D movie of the apartment, plans and prices.
Nick Craig, from Graphic Partners, the creators of the website, said: "We're really pleased that the web site has been nominated for such a prestigious award. We've worked with The Burrell Company for several years now and they've proved that
being bold when it comes to marketing a development such as this leads to great results."
Previous awards for the Upper Strand development include, Best Housing Project at the National HomeBuilder Design Awards 2005, for best housing design, layout and landscaping in the UK.
Colin Rae, Development Director in Scotland for The Places for People Group, said: "Edinburgh Waterfront is an area that has been neglected and underused for many years. The potential to transform it into a new place, in keeping with the overall context of the city, was clear from the outset and evident in the awards we have already won and those we have been shortlisted for."
Upper Strand provides a range of styles, including one, two and three bedroom, live/work duplex apartments and penthouses, starting at £125,000. The show home is open daily 10 until 5.30.
