The international expertise of Sutherland Hussey Architects (SHA) has been called on to transform a former metal works site in Leith into a stylish residential development for first time buyers.
Co-founders Charlie Sutherland and Charlie Hussey have an impressive industry track record after years of working across the globe on major projects in Italy and Berlin before setting up the Edinburgh-based firm in 1996.
The latest development, Assembly Street in Leith, will see the architects joining forces with urban regeneration specialists, The Burrell Company in association with Places for People. The project will create 11 apartments and a further 15 new build properties including ground floor commercial space.
SHA will draw on the company's local and international knowledge to transform the B-listed warehouse into a range of one and two bedroom properties grouped around an attractive courtyard.
Charles Sutherland of SHA said: "The design of Assembly House has been carefully thought out to fully appreciate the central location and the vibrancy of the area. Features will include large glass and timber screens opening up the living areas to Edinburgh's evening sun. We've also paid consideration to ensuring that the new build developments complement the refurbished warehouse creating an exciting mix of old and new.
"We've taken inspiration from certain projects we have worked on in the past as well as introducing fresh touches that give it real character. It is designed to appeal in look and price to the first-time buyer market and every element has been considered to ensure it stands out. The plan is to add to what is quickly becoming a bustling, sought after place to live."
SHA is currently working on many developments across the UK on commercial, public, private and residential developments. The company has established a reputation for quality design scooping numerous industry accolades including the RSA gold medal, RIBI regional winners and the Civic Trust Award among others.
Andrew Burrell, managing director of The Burrell Company, said: "SHA has a real grasp of exactly what we're looking to achieve with this development and the exciting part is seeing it come to life. The calibre of the team will ensure we have a development that impresses from an architectural and practical perspective."
Charlie Sutherland and Charlie Hussey studied together at the Mackintosh School of Architecture before going on to both work for the late Sir James Stirling. After six years working for Stirling, Charlie Hussey spent a brief period in Italy working for Renzo Piano.
