Edinburgh based, Allan Murray Architects, who has successfully transformed many of the capital's buildings and facades, is celebrating 15 years of award-winning architectural design this year.
In 2008, the leading architectural firm will continue the ongoing plans to create a new residential and commercial hub in the city with the formation of BUREDI's latest development, Freer St, Fountainbridge, on the former brewery site by the Union Canal.
AMA has worked with BUREDI, a partnership between The Burrell Company and EDI Group, on a number of city projects in the past including the Royal Infirmary, Portobello urban plan, Cowgate Nursery, Tron Square and the award-winning Coalhill 1 and 2 developments in Leith.
The 80m mixed use development at Fountainbridge will rejuvinate a forgotten area of Edinburgh's old industrial district creating a mix of 171 one, two and three-bed apartments and townhouses as well as 8,500 sq meters of office and commercial space.
The plan aims to make a strong urban contribution to the Fountainbridge area with open public spaces and access to the canal for both residents and the public to enjoy. With a new street, the scheme will link Bruntsfield and Merchiston areas to Haymarket Station and the West End.
Allan Murray, co-founder of AMA said: "I have enjoyed helping bring a modern and dynamic new look to many Edinburgh streets as well as restore the city's much loved historical buildings.
"Fountainbridge is an exciting new project that will transform the entire area for the better. It will not only offer modern homes and new working environments but will also provide spaces for people to really enjoy and take pride in."
AMA has achieved an excellent reputation for its innovative and high design standards and has been involved in a variety of projects including state-of-the-art nursery schools, multi-cinema complexes, city shopping centres and impressive residential developments.
This is evident in number of awards they have won including: Scottish Property Award 2003, Commercial Development of the Year for Calton Square, Edinburgh; BCO Best Commercial Workplace National Award 2003 for The Tun, Holyrood and The Scottish Design Award 2001, Best Commercial Building for UDV Guinness HQ.
For the Coalhill development in Leith, AMA and BUREDI scooped Best Apartment Building at Britannia HomeBuilder Design Awards in 2002 and for the Cowgate Nursery, won the EAA 2002 Silver Medal and was Shortlisted for the Prime Minister's Better Public Building Award in 2003.
Andrew Burrell, managing director of The Burrell Company, said: "Allan Murray is one of Scotland's most well known architects and is at the top of his field possessing the tremendous talent to incorporate cutting edge design coupled with a timeless façade. Coalhill 1 and 2 is a tremendous success and continues to receive momentous praise, and I'm confident the Fountainbridge development will bring a much needed lease of life to the area and become a popular development for years to come."
Chair of BUREDI and chief executive of the EDI Group Ian Wall, added: "It's great to be able to work with such a well respected architect and one who has strong links to Edinburgh and its architectural renaissance."
Allan established his design-led architectural practice in 1993 along with fellow architect Alexander Fairweather and will celebrate 15 years in the business this year.
