Ambitious plans to regenerate Paisley's dilapidated Hawkhead Hospital have been unveiled by Kier Homes and The Burrell Company.
Planning and Listed Building Consent applications submitted by Kier Homes in a joint venture with The Burrell Company to create a new housing development at Hawkhead have been approved. The new project will see a total of 326 residential properties set within mature, landscaped grounds including the conversion and restoration of many of the historic buildings on the outskirts of Paisley.
Hawkhead Hospital was designed by Thomas Smith Tait, the most significant Scottish architect of the interwar period. With a portfolio including the Daily Telegraph building in London, the pylons on Sydney Harbour Bridge and St Andrews House in Edinburgh, the 1936 building remains part of a historically and culturally significant group of buildings designed by the acclaimed architect.
Tait is perhaps best remembered for his contribution to the Empire Exhibition held in Glasgow's Bellahouston Park in 1939. The highlight of this exhibition was the 300ft "Tower Of Empire" designed by Tait and built on the summit of the hill in the middle of the park. Only the foundations remain as it was demolished in 1939 due to the outbreak of World War II when it was thought to be a target for aerial attacks.
Andrew Aitchinson, Managing Director of Kier Homes Ltd, said: "Hawkhead Hospital is one of the most prestigious developments in west central Scotland, located in a highly desirable neighbourhood of Paisley. It has provided us with the opportunity to showcase several new house types, demand for which is exceptionally high with more than 1,000 people pre-registering interest. These highly desirable homes provide the perfect package for young professionals, families and retirees alike."
Andrew Burrell, Managing Director of The Burrell Company, said: "Hawkhead Hospital is made up of several beautiful buildings that have long stood underused. This project will help restore them to something akin to Thomas Smith Tait's original splendour and provide a marvellous place to live in an increasingly popular community."
Since the Hawkhead Hospital buildings became surplus to requirements they have fallen into a state of disrepair, and are in some cases derelict. Those which can be safely restored will be converted by The Burrell Company into 131 highly individual homes, while Kier Homes will demonstrate its expertise by using the surrounding land to build 195 contemporary new build properties.
Nestled in a pleasant community and boasting both contemporary and traditional properties, the integrated development will showcase the best of what each company has to offer.
Kier Homes has been building quality homes in some of Scotland's most prestigious locations since 1998. Highly regarded in the marketplace, Kier Homes offers quality and design to a high specification across its entire range of new homes from luxury apartments to two, three and four bedroom family homes to five bedroom detached executive homes.
The Burrell Company has gained a wealth of experience in renovating old hospital buildings into contemporary living spaces having already worked on the spectacular Schaw House in Bearsden, Drumsheugh Gardens in Edinburgh and Elmhill House in Aberdeen.
The Holmes Partnership architects have masterplanned the redevelopment of Hawkhead Hospital and also designed the array of new build homes for the development including a range of two bedroom flats, two bedroom terraced homes, three bedroom semi-detached, four and five bedroom detached and three or four bedroom townhouses. Whilst Elder & Cannon Architects of Glasgow have undertaken the mammoth task of redesigning the rundown hospital into luxury homes including a mix of studio, one, two and three bedroom apartments, duplexes and townhouses.
The development is located on Hawkhead Road, Paisley. The first properties are due to be released for sale later this year.
